Obituary

Mrs. Joan Olivia (Empson) Thorpe, 92, of Warren, PA passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025.

Joanie was born November 5, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the daughter of George and Martha Empson. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters – Jane and Judy, a brother, Ted, and her husband of 34 years, Robert C. Thorpe.

She is survived by three children, two daughters: Lisa Clinton and her husband, Steve, and Cheri Turk and her husband, Jeff; and a son, Phillip Thorpe and his wife, Elizabeth; six grandchildren: Daniel, Jesse, Christine, Alexandra, Aaron, and Gregory; and seven great-grandchildren: Ben, Owen, David, Jude, Caden, Nora, and Barrett.

Joan Thorpe served her country in the United States Navy where she met her husband, Bob. After her time in the service, she worked several jobs with her primary occupation as a CNA at Warren General Hospital where she retired with over 25 years of service.

Joanie was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church in Warren, PA. She spent many hours cutting quilt squares for the ladies quilting group in Warren, PA, and for the First Lutheran Church in Chambersburg, PA, where she lived for 10 years. Most recently, Joanie resided with her daughter, Cheri, in Eugene, Oregon.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, a time of visitation will be held from 10 to 11 A.M. at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, 304 East St. Warren, PA, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 A.M. at the Oakland Cemetery in Warren, PA, with Rev. Elizabeth Thorpe officiating.
