Obituary

Joyce Romain Meyer, age 97, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026; leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, faith, and devotion to family.

Born on May 24, 1929, to Lewis and Ester Raisor, Joyce entered the world during a challenging time in American history. As the youngest child in her family, she learned early the values of perseverance, hard work, and determination. Those qualities would guide her throughout her life and help shape the loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend so many came to know and cherish.

As a young woman in Warren, Pennsylvania, Joyce enjoyed the companionship of a close-knit group of friends. Through those friendships, she met Harold Meyer, a young veteran returning home from military service. Drawn to his ambition, strong work ethic, and lively spirit, Joyce found in Harold a partner with whom she would build a beautiful life. They were married on June 10, 1950, in the Catholic faith and began a marriage that would span more than five decades.

Together, Joyce and Harold created a home filled with love, faith, laughter, and family. After living briefly in Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania, and later in Ashville, New York, they settled near Blockville, New York, where they raised their four children: Phyllis Louise, Marc, Randall, and Kevin. Joyce considered motherhood one of life’s greatest blessings and devoted herself wholeheartedly to caring for her family. She found joy in family gatherings, holiday celebrations, and the everyday moments that brought loved ones together.

As her children grew older, Joyce pursued her own educational goals. She attended Jamestown Community College and earned certification as a Teacher Aide. She went on to work for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), assisting high school students with disabilities. She cared deeply for her students and took pride in helping them learn, grow, and succeed. Her compassion extended beyond the classroom as she helped establish a union for teacher aides in Chautauqua County and served in leadership roles for many years.

Service was a constant thread throughout Joyce’s life. She volunteered as a leader with the Chautauqua County Girl Scout Council and was active in various committees at her Catholic church. She and her husband were founding members with the Harmony Historical Society where Joyce participated in the hand quilting group and open hearth cooking demonstrations at festivals. She integrated community involvement with family devotion.

Retirement brought new adventures for Joyce and Harold as they traveled throughout the country in their RV, spending winters in Texas and later Florida. They treasured their time together and the memories they created along the way. Eventually, they returned home to Warren, Pennsylvania, where they enjoyed living close to family.

Following Harold’s passing in 2006, Joyce continued to embrace life with courage and grace. At the Rouse community, she formed new friendships, participated enthusiastically in activities, and served as President of the Residents’ Council for three years. Wherever she lived, Joyce brought warmth, kindness, and a genuine interest in others.

Perhaps Joyce’s greatest accomplishment was the personal growth she achieved throughout her life. She worked diligently to cultivate inner peace, and that peace radiated through her relationships. Her family remembers her as a woman who continually sought to lead with love, understanding, compassion, and an open heart.

Joyce is survived by her children, Phyllis Louise Meyer of the Greater Chicago area; Marc Meyer and his partner, Monica Weber, of Cleveland, Ohio; Randall Meyer and his partner, Robin Webster of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Kevin Meyer and his wife, Kimberly, of Warren, Pennsylvania. She was a proud grandmother to Meredith Smith and her husband, Jed Smith, of Erie, Pennsylvania, Logan Meyer and his partner, Alicia Vavala, of Warren, Pennsylvania, and Todd Kirisits of Atlanta, Georgia. She was especially delighted by her role as great-grandmother to Harper Smith, who brought her much happiness.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Harold Meyer, and her loving daughter-in-law, Alison Meyer.

Joyce’s life was a testament to perseverance, faith, and unconditional love. The family she nurtured and the countless lives she touched will carry her memory forward. Though she will be deeply missed, her example of compassion, strength, and kindness will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Her family finds comfort in knowing that she is reunited with Harold and resting in God’s eternal peace.
