Obituary

Ricky Lee Mitchell

January 29, 1958 – February 5, 2026

Ricky Lee Mitchell passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by friends and loved ones. He is now at peace.

Rick spent the first chapter of his life in California, where he lived fast, worked hard, and raised more than a little hell. He played on race cars, worked roofing jobs, tore up the Pismo dunes, and became well known as one of those Mitchell boys, perhaps the craziest of them all. His rebellious youth and larger-than-life stories became the stuff of legend, told and retold with a grin and a sparkle in his eye.

Later in life, Rick made a turn that defined who he truly became. After moving to Pennsylvania, he found purpose, stability, and pride in his work as the Head Groundskeeper at Warren Memorial Park, a position he held for more than 30 years. There, Rick was a quiet master of his craft, a savant on the backhoe, a problem-solver, and a mentor. Others looked to him for guidance, knowledge, and steady leadership, and he never hesitated to help.

In the second half of his life, Rick became the father he had always wished to be and a mentor to those who needed direction. His "second act" was one of friendship, companionship, and deep devotion—especially the great care and love he showed for his youngest son Darrian and his adopted family Dustin, Dana, Abigail, and Kylie Patz. Rick believed life wasn't about the mistakes you make, but how you correct yourself and the actions you take afterward. He lived that truth.

Rick had an enduring passion for anything with a motor and never passed up a good deal. He was famous for coming home with unexpected yard-sale treasures, always convinced he'd found gold. His storytelling, whether about his wild youth, racing days, or dune adventures, will be remembered as much as his work ethic and heart.

In his final years, Rick fought hard and endured great pain with resilience and determination. His wish to be reunited with his beloved mother, "Granny," who passed in 2016, has now been fulfilled.

Rick is survived by his daughter Leah, sons Robert and Darrian, adopted kids James "Buck" Emmons and Dustin, and his cherished grandchildren Claire, Tiffany, Kadence, Abigail, and Kylie. He is also survived by five of his brothers and sisters, from a family of twelve.

Ricky Lee Mitchell will be remembered for his tall tales, his hard-earned wisdom, his loyalty, and the remarkable way he rewrote his story. His life stands as proof that redemption is real, growth is possible, and the second act can matter the most.

The Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home Inc., has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
