Stephen John Goodwill, 70, passed away unexpectedly while visiting his son in Florida on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

He was born June 22, 1956, in Warren, PA, a son of the late Ruth Erickson and Albert Goodwill.

Steve attended Warren Area High School, where he was on the wrestling and football teams, graduating in 1974. He attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. While in college he was a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, Eta Omicron Chapter, and he continued to be a contributing alumnus for the remainder of his life.

After graduation, he worked for several different companies, including Montgomery Ward, Serta Mattress Company, Phillip Bell Company, and was manager of Furniture Lane in Erie, PA. In 1992, he started his own business, Mattress & More. The business grew from a small store on the east side of Warren to a larger site in North Warren and then to its current location on Crescent Park. He worked tirelessly six days a week and enjoyed the challenges and rewards of running his own business.

He married his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, the former Kathi Carlson, on August 5, 1978. Alongside Kathi, Steve raised five children, Lisa, Paul, Scott, Joel, and Emily. His children were his pride and joy along with his son-in-law Jason and his daughters-in-law Emily and Fabiola.

Steve was a devoted father, husband, and family man who selflessly gave his time and love to his immediate and extended family. It was his priority to be there for them through all the good times and bad, often helping in unexpected and unasked for ways. He organized family and friend annual events such as the Labor Day Excursions, 4th of July picnics and fireworks parties. Steve loved hosting family get-togethers with Kathi and enjoyed traveling far and wide to visit their children.

Steve transitioned seamlessly from “Dad” into “Papa” to his 15 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. He would invite them out to his garage to play games; build birdhouses, boats and boxes; roast marshmallows around the fire; and listen to his favorite music with him. He celebrated and encouraged each grandchild for their individual talents and interests.

Through Mattress & More, Steve supported the community he grew up in and loved by sponsoring many youth baseball teams, high school sports, and charities around Warren County. Steve will also be remembered for volunteering his time by coaching many youth baseball teams and youth wrestling. He strove to instill the importance of fairness, improvement, and the fun of the sport over winning.

He was a member of the Struthers Independent Hose Company where he held various positions, including Vice President and Trustee. Steve was a longtime fan and season ticket holder of the Buffalo Bills since 1996, attending many games with his friend, Tim Swift. His additional tickets were offered to a rotating cast of friends and family who shared in the memory-making fun of his fabled tailgating rituals.

Steve was also an avid collector of antiques and Warren memorabilia, filling the corners of his store, home and garage with historical items he enjoyed talking about and sharing with others. He enriched our lives with his knowledge and love of local and family history. Every room and every conversation was better with Steve in it. Steve will be remembered by those who knew him for his delightful sense of humor, his quick wit, countless stories about family and Warren history; and deep love for his family, his friends and his community. He will be missed by many who treasure the love, laughter, generosity, and wonderful moments he shared with us.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kathi Goodwill, as well as his five children: Lisa Goodwill, Paul (Fabiola) Goodwill, Scott Goodwill, Joel (Emily) Goodwill, and Emily (Jason) Adams; 15 grandchildren: Maya, Theoden, Davina, Arthur, Harvey, Veronica, Ambrose, Solomon, Aesa, Isla, Isaac, Augustin, Ian, Prisca, and Evelyn; two sisters, Sharon Eaton and Susan (Rick) Curren; a brother, Jay (Mimi) Goodwill; and many loved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by an infant son, Kevin Goodwill; a sister, Nancy Bonavita; a brother-in-law, Jim Eaton; a nephew, Jamie Eaton; and a niece, Maria Knight.

Friends may call at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home Inc., 304 East St., Warren, PA on Friday September 18, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday September 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM in the funeral home with Rev. Ralph Culp, pastor of Covenant Methodist Church, and Rev. Mark O’Hern, pastor of Holy Redeemer R.C. Church, co-officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph R.C. Cemetery, Warren, PA.
